Two days later I snuck into my son’s piano recital at his then school, an award-winning academy for gifted pupils. He was already studying High School stuff and to be honest, it scared me. I sat staring, telling myself that the six-year-old boy was my son, though he would never know that. He performed a Chopin piece without fault (I discerned this from other parents nearby who were as green around the gills as could be, unaware I was the child’s mother and was sat right alongside them).

I saw Pascal in that boy. Oh, he was his father’s son. It frightened me that he was so clever because I wondered whether he would suffer the same sociopathic tendencies as his father. Pascal told me that Chris already spoke three languages: French, English and a touch of German.

Across the Atlantic, Vivienne and Hamish were struggling with Seraph, who was rebellious and naughty at school. They had called me numerous times to discuss it and I winced inwardly, knowing she really was my daughter. I had tried to tell them that Seraph would grow out of it but they didn’t seem convinced. So when I said, ‘Get her some puzzles… not the child ones… difficult ones. She will be fine.’

They did – and soon she was asking for more.
